Fishing in SkyBlock is much deeper than vanilla Minecraft. You catch Sea Creatures instead of just fish, and different locations produce different creatures and items. Fishing also contributes to your Fishing Skill XP and unlocks powerful gear.
Sea Creature Chance
Your Sea Creature Chance (SCC) stat determines how often you catch a sea creature vs. a regular fish. Higher SCC = more sea creature loot. Aim for at least 30% SCC before grinding sea creature drops.
| Rod | Where to get | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Rod of Legends | Fisherman merchant or AH | Starting rod |
| Auger Rod | Crafted | First upgrade, adds Sea Creature Chance |
| Ammonite's Pick | Crafted | Best early fishing rod |
| Shredder | Crafted (Trophy Fish) | Best for catching sea creatures |
| Rod of the Sea | Crafted | Endgame AoE rod |
| Shredder (AOTS build) | Crafted | Best for coins/hr in lava fishing |
Shredder First
The Shredder is one of the first "real" rods you should aim for. It pulls multiple fish at once when enchanted with Spiked Hook, dramatically increasing loot/hr.
Best for early game. Catch basic fish + sea creatures like Squid, Sea Walker, Sea Guardian.
Best early Fishing XP. During Jerry's Workshop events the pond has increased sea creature spawns.
Seasonal. Catch Werewolves, Water Hydras, Sea Witches. Good for Wizard Hats and loot bags.
Used mainly for Trophy Fishing. Unique creatures like the Catfish, Nurse Shark, and Blue Whale. Barn fishing drops Trophy Fish that can be traded for high-value items.
Best fishing XP and coins/hr in mid-to-late game. Requires a lava rod (e.g., Hellfire Rod). Catch Lava Flame, Fire Eel, and Moogma for profitable drops.
Lava Rods Required
Regular water rods do not work in lava. You need a lava-specific rod. The cheapest good option is the Hellfire Rod from the Crimson Isle merchant.
SCC is your most important fishing stat. Sources:
| Source | SCC Bonus |
|---|---|
| Fishing Level (each level) | +0.2% per level |
| Shark Scale Boots | +5% |
| Rod enchant: Expertise | Up to +10% |
| Rod enchant: Blessing | +12.5% |
| Fishing Helmet (Diver set) | Small bonus |
| Dolphin/Whale pet | Passive bonus per level |
| Sonar Device (talisman) | +5% |
| Spooky Festival buff | +25% temporary |
Trophy Fishing is a special fishing mechanic in the Barn area. You catch rare Trophy Fish that can be traded to Odger in exchange for:
Trophy Fish tiers: Bronze → Silver → Gold. Higher tiers are rarer and worth more.
Rodent Fishing
The Shredder rod is crafted from Trophy Fish materials. It is one of the best fishing rods in the game for pulling in multiple catches simultaneously.
| Pet | Best for | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Dolphin | Early–mid XP | Passive Fishing XP multiplier |
| Whale | Mid–late XP + drops | +Fishing Fortune per rarity level |
| Squid | Magic Find build | Drops rare items more often |
| Flying Fish | Sea creature coins | Boosts sea creature drops |
| Ocelot | Foraging (not fishing) | Don't confuse with fishing pets |
Dolphin → Whale Transition
Use a Legendary Dolphin until you can afford a Legendary Whale. The Whale's Fishing Fortune bonus is enormous and directly affects your drop rates.
